Jared Kushner's overseas luxury resort project faces anti-corruption investigation amid violent protests

Albania's Special Anti-Corruption Structure, known as SPAK, has launched an investigation into a luxury resort project on the country's coast that is linked to Jared Kushner, former senior advisor to Donald Trump. The probe comes as violent protests have erupted over the development, with demonstrators clashing with police near the proposed site.

The project, which includes plans for a high-end hotel and villas on the Ionian Sea, has drawn sharp criticism from environmental groups and local residents. They argue that the construction threatens protected ecosystems and violates zoning laws. Protests escalated this week when authorities attempted to clear land for the development, leading to scuffles and several arrests.

SPAK's investigation focuses on potential corruption in the approval process, including allegations of bribery and undue influence. Kushner's company, Affinity Partners, has denied any wrongdoing, stating that all permits were obtained legally. However, the probe has intensified scrutiny of foreign investments in Albania, a country still grappling with a legacy of graft.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project as a boost for tourism and jobs, but critics accuse his government of prioritizing wealthy investors over public interest. The unrest highlights growing tensions in the Balkans over unchecked development and the role of politically connected figures in such deals. As the investigation proceeds, the fate of the resort remains uncertain.
